Under the banner of "Operation Epic Fury," the US military has already executed over 7,800 strikes since late February. However, achieving broader strategic goals might soon require a physical footprint. American officials are currently weighing the risks of sending forces to secure Kharg Island, the vital nerve center responsible for 90% of Iran's oil exports. Other options on the table include guarding the Strait of Hormuz or securing remaining stockpiles of highly enriched uranium.
Putting "boots on the ground" carries immense political and physical risks for Washington. While the campaign has largely relied on air and naval power, 13 American service members have already been killed and roughly 200 wounded. The US military's operational capacity in the region also took a recent hit after the USS Gerald R Ford aircraft carrier was forced to reroute to Greece for maintenance following an onboard fire.
Tehran, meanwhile, is showing no signs of backing down. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for a recent barrage of strikes against regional oil infrastructure, describing it as the 63rd wave of "Operation True Promise 4." The IRGC stated these actions were direct retaliation for the ongoing US-Israel offensive and the death of Iran's Intelligence Minister, Esmaeil Khatib. Beyond energy sites, Iranian forces assert they precision-struck 80 military targets across Israel using multi-warhead missiles and drones, hitting areas from Eilat in the south to the outskirts of Tel Aviv.
This rapid tit-for-tat has officially dragged the global energy sector into the crosshairs. The IRGC explicitly warned that any further attacks on Iranian energy assets would result in the "total destruction" of allied infrastructure. The immediate fallout is already rippling through global markets, pushing oil prices steadily higher.
President Donald Trump has maintained a hardline stance while navigating the shifting battlefield. Responding to the latest IRGC strikes, Trump took to Truth Social to clarify that the US and Qatar were completely blind-sided by a recent attack on Qatari LNG facilities. He issued a stark ultimatum: Israel will hold off on targeting Iran’s lucrative South Pars Field, but if Tehran strikes Qatari assets again, the United States will retaliate with "overwhelming force." At the same time, Trump openly questioned the necessity of the US unilaterally securing the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting that other nations who rely on the waterway should shoulder the responsibility.
Amid the escalating chaos, the immediate threat of a nuclear-armed Iran appears to have been neutralized. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard recently confirmed to lawmakers that targeted strikes had effectively obliterated Iran's nuclear enrichment facilities, leaving the underground entrances buried in cement.
