‘We Will Take It to Kolkata’: Khawaja Asif’s Warning Escalates Tensions After Rajnath Singh’s Tough Stand

India-Pakistan Tensions Rise Khawaja Asif Warns of ‘Kolkata Strike’
Tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors have reached a new boiling point following an aggressive exchange of words between top defence officials.

In a startling escalation of rhetoric, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has threatened to launch a strike on the eastern Indian city of Kolkata in the event of any "future misadventures" by New Delhi. The provocative remark comes just days after Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh issued a severe ultimatum, warning Islamabad of "unprecedented and decisive" action if cross-border terrorism continues.

Speaking to reporters in his hometown of Sialkot, Asif made his stance clear. “If India attempts another false-flag operation, then, God willing, we will take it to Kolkata,” he declared.

To double down on his claims, Asif alleged without providing any evidence that India might be orchestrating a "false-flag" operation. He suggested that New Delhi could potentially use detained Pakistanis or its own operatives to stage an incident, plant bodies, and unjustly blame Islamabad. Emphasizing Pakistan's military readiness, Asif noted that any response to Indian aggression would be "swift, calibrated, and decisive."

The Shadow of the Pahalgam Attack

The backdrop to this fierce diplomatic clash is the impending anniversary of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Last year, the brutal strike claimed the lives of 26 civilians, the majority of whom were tourists, at the hands of Pakistan-backed terrorists.

The tragic event triggered a brief but intense military confrontation between the two nations in May 2025. In retaliation, India launched 'Operation Sindoor', a massive counter-offensive that reportedly destroyed at least nine terror camps and major military infrastructure inside Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir within just 22 minutes. Hostilities only subsided on May 10 after Islamabad appealed for a ceasefire, though India maintained that its anti-terror operations were merely paused, not concluded.

India’s Resounding Ultimatum

Asif's aggressive posturing was a direct reaction to recent comments made by India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Speaking at an election rally in Kerala on Thursday, Singh did not mince words regarding India's zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism.

Highlighting the success of Operation Sindoor, Singh reminded the public that India had successfully brought Pakistan to its knees following the Pahalgam tragedy. "I would like to tell you the operation is not over yet," Singh asserted. "If such dirty actions are repeated by Pakistan, our armed forces will give a befitting reply that they will never forget. What will happen this time will be an unprecedented action."

Singh further emphasized that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India's national security apparatus has undergone a paradigm shift, citing the surgical strikes post-Uri, the Balakot airstrikes after Pulwama, and Operation Sindoor as clear examples of India's proactive defense strategy.

A Pattern of Provocation

Khawaja Asif is not the only Pakistani official making headlines for inflammatory comments. Just days prior to Asif's Kolkata threat, former Pakistani High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit, suggested that Islamabad should target major Indian metropolitan hubs like Mumbai and New Delhi.

In a bizarre hypothetical scenario, Basit argued that if the United States ever threatened Pakistan's nuclear arsenal, India would serve as the "next best option" for a retaliatory strike, as the US remains beyond their geographic reach. “If someone casts an evil eye on us, we will strike Mumbai and New Delhi without hesitation,” Basit warned.

As the anniversary of the Pahalgam attack approaches, the international community is keeping a close watch on the subcontinent, hoping the current war of words does not spiral into renewed military conflict. India, meanwhile, has yet to issue an official response to Asif's latest remarks.
