PM Modi Inaugurates New Jodhpur Airport Terminal, Launches Revamped UDAN Scheme to Boost Regional Connectivity

PM Modi Inaugurates New Jodhpur Airport Terminal
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday unveiled the new passenger terminal at Jodhpur Airport, marking a major milestone for Rajasthan's aviation infrastructure. During the event, he also launched the Modified UDAN Scheme, a renewed push to expand affordable regional air travel and strengthen connectivity across India.

The inauguration was attended by Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagade, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and other dignitaries.

A Modern Terminal Designed for Future Growth

Built at an investment of ₹480 crore, the new Jodhpur Airport terminal spans more than 23,000 square metres and has been designed to accommodate up to 20 lakh passengers annually, significantly increasing the airport's handling capacity.

The facility offers upgraded passenger amenities aimed at improving the travel experience, including spacious waiting areas, modern check-in facilities, and enhanced operational efficiency.

Inspired by Rajasthan's Royal Heritage

One of the terminal's standout features is its architectural design, which reflects Rajasthan's rich cultural identity. Traditional elements such as arches, jharokhas, and heritage-inspired detailing have been blended with contemporary airport infrastructure, creating a terminal that showcases local craftsmanship while meeting modern aviation standards.

During the inauguration ceremony, folk artists welcomed the Prime Minister with traditional cultural performances, highlighting the state's vibrant heritage.

Modified UDAN Scheme Gets a Major Financial Push

Alongside the airport inauguration, Prime Minister Modi launched the Modified UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) Scheme, which has been allocated ₹28,840 crore over the next ten years.

The revamped initiative aims to expand regional air connectivity by improving access to underserved and remote areas while making air travel more affordable for citizens. The upgraded version of the scheme focuses on strengthening aviation infrastructure, increasing route connectivity, and supporting the next phase of India's aviation-led economic growth.

Boost for Tourism, Trade and Regional Economy

The new terminal is expected to enhance Jodhpur's position as one of Rajasthan's key tourism gateways. Improved passenger capacity and better connectivity are likely to benefit tourism, local businesses, and trade while supporting economic development across western Rajasthan.

The infrastructure upgrade also aligns with the government's broader strategy of modernising airports and improving regional connectivity under the UDAN programme.

Why It Matters

The inauguration of Jodhpur's new airport terminal represents more than just an infrastructure upgrade. Combined with the expansion of the Modified UDAN Scheme, it reflects the government's continued focus on improving regional air connectivity, supporting tourism, and creating long-term economic opportunities through aviation development.
